Lady with a Glass Eye

Image
Have you seen the animated movie Sing? In the movie, there is a quirky, old lady chameleon who has a glass eye. August decided to re-invent this character in human form. Here is what he came up with: And a closer-up shot: When I asked him about his drawing, he mentioned the texture of the skin which he modeled after the palm of his hand. He also said he worked hard on the divot under the nose (he called it by it's actual name but of course I can't remember what that is.) For reference, the drawing is about 4 inches tall. I'll be sure to post an update when he makes progress with this drawing. I have a feeling he is going to complete this one!

The Mummy is Complete!

August finished his mummy (zombie) drawing! Here are a couple of detail shots:  What do you think? August is pretty proud of this one!

St. Louis, Part 2

As promised, here are the photos of (most of) the sketches August did over the weekend in St. Louis. Which one is your favorite?         I'm partial to this guy...

St. Louis

Hello! We spent last weekend in St. Louis and had a great time! The main purpose of the trip was a soccer tournament, but we managed to squeeze in a lot of fun in the short time we were there. We caught a Cubs game and of course visited the Arch, but the highlight of the trip was the City Museum.  Have you been there? It is amazing! It really is such a unique place that I fear my description won't do it justice. It is creative and inspiring and just plain fun. There are slides, tunnels, caves, tree houses, castles, airplanes, and more incorporated into an old warehouse with so much character and beauty. Truly incredible! A perfect example of beauty and function co-existing.  August is not a fan of sports despite having three brothers who live and breathe athletics. Fortunately, a pad of paper and pencil are very portable. He drew in the car(thankfully, he didn't inherit my motion sickness), in the hotel, and on the soccer field.  He started so many drawings...

A Silly Seuss Character

Image
Meet Albert the Dog. August was given the task of creating a silly Seuss character. Here is what, I mean who, he created. Get ready for your close-up, Albert.  Doesn't he look Seussical in his striped shirt? What a fun assignment for an artist! What would your silly Seuss character look like?

Happy "Mummy's" Day!

Image
Hello and Happy Mother's Day! We are in St. Louis for a quick weekend trip,  but I wanted to show you a drawing that August calls his "mummy." Usually, August works on something for awhile and then his perfectionist qualities take over and he abandons the drawing. This one, however, has had staying power. The details amaze me!! I say it again and again, but his mind works differently than most. To me, this drawing is the perfect example of his complex brain. What do you think? I hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday and a good week ahead! I'll be back in a day or two with more artwork. Take care!

Thank you!

Wow! Thank you for all of the support so far! I hit publish less than 24 hours ago and we have had so many page views. The most amazing part is that we have had page views in EIGHT countries. That is truly incredible! August's face lit up when I told him. He is excited and motivated to "show his art to the world." I know that we have some subscribers, too, but I can't figure out where to approve them. Rookie blogger here, remember? Clearly, I have some work to do.  Thanks again for your patience and support. And the real reason you are here...August's art. This is a sketch of a crab that August started at school and worked on a little bit at home. I don't know about you, but if I were to draw a crab from memory it wouldn't look anything like this. Hope the rest of your Thursday is wonderful!

A quick after dinner drawing. I love his original characters! It is always interesting to me to see the details of his faces. Made with his beloved Prismacolor pencils.

Welcome!

Welcome to my new blog showcasing August's drawings! I am happy you are here. I will do my best to update the blog when August has created something new. It might be a quick sketch or a completed drawing. Actually, it is quite rare for him to finish a drawing, so most of the photos will be  "in progress." A little about the artist...August is a 10 year old boy with a huge passion for art. He has three sports-loving brothers (Owen, Asher and Ellis)  and a crazy mini-golden doodle Beckham. Mom Claire (that's me!) and Dad Rob encourage August to be his own person and pursue his love of drawing. August loves animated movies and is often inspired to draw characters from the movies. Moana is the current favorite.  He is a quirky and loving boy and we couldn't be prouder! Mostly self-taught, August loves to watch drawing tutorials on YouTube. He would love to create his own tutorial, so maybe we will attempt that someday. He is currently trying to achieve rea...
